The Last Pass

And so, another season of Football American style, comes to an end with the grandest of spectacles. As watched an event as there is in the world, the Super Bowl attracts even those who care nary about the sport. But, my friends, my friend’s care. I don’t have a horse in this fight, obviously, but I do have opinions.

This game pits the two best teams against each other. Doesn’t always happen but these teams are incredibly evenly matched. Same record, same point totals, they share a history with Andy Reid, they both have a Kelce; the Chiefs Number One fan is the obnoxious brother of Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes and 98% of all Eagle fans are obnoxious. Even Stephen. But who wins?

First, it should be a close game. Yes, turnovers, acts of craziness can change an outcome, but it should be close. Both QB’s are terrific, and both are playing at less than 100%. The match-up of Jalen Hurts’ hurt shoulder versus the inexperienced Chiefs secondary is equal to the conundrum of the ferocious Eagle pass rush versus the virtuoso Mahomes and his leg injury. And, I think, in the latter, the answer of the winner lies. Eagles pass rush versus Chief’s offense.

Unquestionably, the Eagles line is outstanding. Seventy sacks in a season are a remarkable achievement. The Chief’s line is also very good with the strength in the middle and good tackles on the outside. Haasan Reddick and his guys will be trouble.

But here’s the thing: no one argues that the AFC, overall is stronger and in quarterback play, it isn’t close. Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and the rest are formidable. The NFC is deficient in this area and this season, the Eagles benefitted from this. Now, as a Cowboys fan, this denigrates my team, but eh, the Eagles played a Big 12 type schedule. The three best QB’s the Eagles played were Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff and Dak Prescott. Rodgers was in the middle of his worst season; Goff had a great final six weeks (they played week one) and Prescott is Prescott. They scored 33, 35 and 40 points against the vaunted Eagles D. The rest of the games were against Daniel Jones, Trevor Lawrence, Taylor Heinecke, Sam Ehlinger, Justin Fields, Malik Willis, Andy Dalton.. not exactly a murderer’s row of quarterbacks. They played Jacksonville early, when they were bad and Tennessee late when they were worse.

Does this downplay the Eagles season? Not at all. You beat who you play. But, in a game where the splittist of split seconds makes all the difference, between a sack and a pass, could a quarterback like Mahomes be the difference? Could he complete a pass on a play that would have resulted in a Kirk Cousins sack? I think so. Let’s include Andy Reid in this equation. Arguably one of the five greatest offensive minds in the history of the sport, I think he can devise a strong game plan to thwart the rush. I would expect Isiah Pacheco and Jerick Mckinnon to catch a lot of counter screens and Travis Kelce to have a huge role.

And this is the slightest of advantages in what is a great match-up. I think it will be a very close game but, in the end, Kansas City 30 and Philly 28.
