The art of smack-talking, sh#t-talking is a real thing in sports. From the playgrounds of Ohio to the mean streets of the Bronx, talking trash covers every sport, every gender, every socio-economic boundary and has done so since the dawn of time. However, when trash talking comes from the stands and the crowd, it’s heckling. Now there is a fine art to heckling as well, from the old guys in the mezzanine of The Muppet Show to the great heckler of the NBA, Robin Fricker, the art of the heckle is annoying but harmless.
However, heckling can become something else if done improperly and taken too far. That’s harassment. The Golden State Warriors have a minority owner who isn’t allowed in the arena anymore due to his nasty harassment; the Malice in the Palace stemmed from unruly fans bringing issue with Ron Artest and that Pacer team. All the fans in those incidents are banned for life from every arena. And so… why is Shannon Sharpe receiving preferential treatment? I’m sure you’re all aware of Sharpe’s confrontation with the Memphis Grizzlies, Dillon Brooks, Ja Morant and Steven Adams especially. Yes, he has apologized on his show but in this louder is more popular market of talk TV and radio, Sharpe’s action’s the other night merit more viewers if nothing else. He should have been removed from the floor and a suspension of privileges should incur. He of all people should understand the arena the athlete is in and where the line is drawn; a former player, a Hall of Famer who once played in the same arena as the players he insulted. Poor form Shannon.
A Roll of the Eyes goes to Mike Mccarthy and Kellen Moore for the insanely idiotic formation they concocted for the final play of the Dallas Cowboy season. It was bad enough they were going to lose and in disappointing fashion; but to play Zeke as center (and get steam-rolled in what may be his last play as a Cowboy) and then toss a 9-yard pass (only 71-yards more to go) was an eye-rolling (that seems about right) finish to another disappointing season.
A Hearty Clap on the Back and applause goes to Joe Burrows and the Cincinnati Bengals who showed, once again, they’ve got the right stuff, despite being three O-Lineman down. Now, I don’t know if they go in KC and win again but I wouldn’t bet against them.
Enjoy your week and I’ll be back on Friday with a rundown of the Baseball Hall of Fame and all it’s follies.
