Soooo, it’s not personal. Nothing personal at all. I just don’t like Phil Collins. I mean, not as a person, I’ve never met him. Perhaps he’s a terrific father, a fine husband and a gentle lover. I just don’t care. I do not like his music. Never have and never will. Do I hate him? Of course not. No. That would make me a sociopath and by definition, THAT, I am not. I might need to relook at the definition.
I just don’t like Phil Collins. His music, I mean. I mean, he’s not onions, mayo or coconut maybe corn, (all things I DO hate and are numbers 1-4 on my Enemies list) so I don’t hate him. He’s a celebrity like any other celebrity. He’s big on IG and FB and any other social medium. And yes, he did the soundtrack for a Disney movie. Terrific. I don’t care.
I’m sure he’s a decent fella. Again, I just don’t like his music. At all. Never have. No Jacket Required? No interest whatsoever. Do I think he ruined Genesis? I’m a Peter Gabriel fan so I’ll let you decide that. I know for my generation there is a certain affinity with Phil Collins. Can’t hurry love (ripped off from Diana Ross). Against all Odds, that’ll I’ll ever like that song. Su-su-sudio? Crap-crap-crapio.
He was a part of the 80s. Super minor part of 70s and 90s. Super minor and I just don’t like his music.
Now, I’m not an Eagles fan but I appreciate some of their harmonies and their place in rock history. Who doesn’t like Tequila Sunrise. I mean, they started out with Linda Ronstadt?!? How cool is that? I’m not a big REO Speedwagon fan and Foreigner I can take or leave but there’s just something about Phil’s music that grates on me. Some people don’t like Dave Matthews Band (I’m ambivalent). Most people dislike Creed and Nickleback (with various degrees of good reasoning. I also covered Creed at The Forum, once, and saw a viewer wearing a t-shirt that had Jesus on the front and it read ‘Even Jesus hates Creed. Amazing).
But I will agree, some people really like Phil Collins. And I think that’s swell. If his tunes get your toes a-tapping, goodie for you. One of my good friends walked down the aisle to Follow me, Follow you of Genesis dis-fame at his wedding. Now our choice, at my wedding, for our first dance was Frank Sinatra’s’ Witchcraft (who doesn’t love Sinatra) and my marriage was absolute disaster, so what do I know.
So, like Phil Collins. I don’t care. I don’t dislike him as a person but crap… if I walk into a bar with Groovy Kind of Love playing, we will have words. And I know my friend Danny will play that song over and over now.
And I love music. I was a music journalist and covered great bands. Also covered bad bands but I remember more of the good. I’m psyched to be able to go to concerts again and I download 10-15 new songs a week. Just none of them are Phil Collins’ stuff.
It is nothing personal. I’ve heard he’s a good father and perhaps a Mensch in real life. Okay, Phil Collins, if I don’t like your stuff, it has absolutely no effect on your life. Nor should it make me a bad person. But in the end, apologies if your music makes me gag but maybe… we can still be friends? I mean, you can’t hurry love.
