The gravity of time pulls on all of us. Many of us spend our lives in the pursuit against that gravity but the scientific truth is that the gravity always wins in the end. Father Time is undefeated. As a person who loves and takes care of his Dad, I see the everyday in’s and out’s of aging and it can be a little overwhelming to know all I can be, is a help.
My Dad is a lifelong Dodger fan, as am I, and I’ve spent many a glorious moment with him at Dodger games. Ups and downs. He took me as a young child to see a rookie pitcher named Fernando pitch in Cincinnati. As an adult, I took him to his first playoff game and watched Jonathan Broxton throw a first pitch fastball to Matt Stairs that is still going. When the Dodgers won the World Series last year, it was an amazing moment shared between he and I. Years of solidarity pulling for the same team came together in a confluence of victory, joy and happiness.
A few years ago, my Dad told me he thought he’d never see another game live. Dodger Stadium can be a difficult stadium to navigate, especially if you’re 88. I decided I wasn’t going to let that happen. Luckily, I had an amazing support group.
Thanks to my friend, Matt, and my wonderful girl, Heather and our friend, Lyn, we were able to take my Dad to a Dodger game at Dodger Stadium. What a moment it was! To share such a moment with my Dad and those I care about, was something I’ll never forget and will now stand-out as my favorite memory of attending a Dodger game.
As we entered My Blue Heaven, the tears began to well up in my Dad’s eyes. I cannot imagine the emotions he felt as he entered a realm he never thought he’d see again. He’s seen Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Fernando, Orel and, on this night, he saw Julio Urias. The tears were of joy but also understanding. We are mortal. But, if we strive and have the tools and the right people around us, we perhaps can achieve a moment of immortality.
I can’t bring the world to everyone. I have things I need and want to bring to myself but also, and more important, to those I love. Sometimes I fail. But, on this night, success was achieved and we fought off the gravity of time at least for awhile.
